Running an extended backwash can help to clear up debris that may have gotten stuck in the tank. We'll take you through some steps below on how to perform this on your unit. Please note this process has a low risk that the bottom distributor may fail (especially on older units), letting resin beads escape into the plumbing.
1. You'll start by holding the Recharge button down until you hear the motor start to turn, then let go. You'll see a flashing recharge indicator on the display screen to know you've started the process.
2. Now, when the motor stops, the tank will start filling. We are going to skip this by tapping the Recharge button one time.
3. Next, when the motor stops, the tank will be moving into the brining cycle. Press the Recharge button one more time to advance to the backwash cycle.
4. Once the unit is in backwash, you'll hear a large flow of water run through the system and out your drain hose. During this process, fresh water flows upwards through the media, moving it around and creating pathways for flow. This is the process we're going to extend, to help clear up that space.
5. You'll need to go and unplug your unit from the outlet and set a timer for 20 minutes.
6. After the 20 minutes is up, head on back. Plug your unit back in and let the softener automatically finish the recharge (about 10-15 minutes).
