Wondering why the order of installation matters when using both a water filtration system and a water softener? Let's go through a breakdown below.
If you’re using city water, install the filtration system before the softener. City water often has chlorine to keep it disinfected, but chlorine can wear down parts of the softener, especially the resin. By putting the filtration system first, you help protect the softener.
For well water, it’s best to install the filtration system after the softener. Well water doesn’t have chlorine but often has iron and tiny particles, like sediment. The filtration system can help catch larger sediment that may pass through the softener.
Key points to remember:
- Check the Owner's Manual for specific product details and usage instructions.
- A central water filtration system reduces chlorine taste but won’t remove iron or hydrogen sulfide (the rotten egg smell).
- Neither the central water filtration nor whole home water filtration system is a replacement for a sediment filter. If your water has small particles or iron, you might need a separate sediment or iron filter. Check out our article on different Types of Iron for more details.
- Only use these filters with water that’s microbiologically safe or properly disinfected.
